Being with someone who is dying can change your life in a positive way. You can experience the dignity of being human. Yet embracing the idea of death is like hugging blowing feathers or dancing with the devil. What is death? Is it something or nothing? Increasingly in our society has declared death something, that with the proper technology, can be put off almost indefinitely. Yet the fear that it may happen unexpectedly, without warning, haunts us. We shudder at the possibility of ending our days hooked into machines, unable to say goodbye. Is there anything to help us or others have a well-received death?

In six classes spread out over six months, we will explore how we can be of genuine help to ourselves and others. The classes will include lectures, guest speakers, group discussion and small group dialogues. There will be exercises and contemplations to consider in the month between each class.

Conscious Caregiving

February 4 – 6, 2011 @ Shambhala Mountain Center
A regenerative weekend of mindful caring for the caregiver.

The natural ebb of life force is a genuine and precious part of human experience. Watching this can be like standing on the beach at night, while the tide rolls out - we feel lonely, and the effect is haunting and hard to fathom. As caregivers we face burnout, confusion, and resistance, often wondering how to respect the dignity of both ourselves and our loved ones. We will draw upon discussion, exercises, and mutual support to illuminate how we can care for each other in ways that in turn allow us to provide support to those in need. By learning how to enter, enrich and exit the worlds of those we look after, we can transform the path of caregiving into a journey of mindfulness and reward.
